Why it's called The Standard
A standard is what you do when motivation is gone.
At eleven I had a stutter bad enough that I'd rather stay quiet. One night I wrote on the frame of my sister's bunk bed: I will not stutter tomorrow. Not a goal. A standard. The next day I stopped.
Same thing got me through BUD/S. Nothing about my body changed between the day I failed the water test and the day I passed it. The standard did.
Motivation is a feeling. A standard is a decision you already made, so the morning doesn't get a vote. That's what we train. The workout is how.
